Mexican authorities have banned Maya spiritual leaders from performing ceremonies at their ancestral temples, which are about to be overrun by a curious assortment of conspiracy theorists, dooms-dayers, new-agers and well-intentioned tourists who just want to be apart of the festivities.

The Ceremonies are meant to mark the end of the Maya long-count calendar, which began 13 Baktun (cycles) ago. Under the Greco-Roman Calender, that’s about 3112 BC.

Contrary to popular (mis)belief, the end of the long-count calendar is being viewed as something positive. As Mayan priest Jose Manrique Esquive recently pointed out, the current Baktun, which began around 1618, has been drenched by a continuous reign of misery that included the introduction of European disease, culture and language being erased and entire populations being extinguished.

Because of these stupid and unnecessary 12 condos ( Priced from $549,000 - $599,000) my disabled mom+4 sibs, grandma, uncle+aunt+cousin (basically my entire immediate family) and most of the residents of nearby apartments will probably be moving in a year or two from the apts many have rented since the late 60s and early 70s.

Honestly, this is like some “and then they came for me” shit weve watched the neighborhood change on both sides of us since 1998 and Western Addition/Fillmore/Lower Haight residents have been increasingly unwelcomed in local establishments we once owned or frequented, the corner stores replaced by bike cafes, the huge laundrymat that served many people replaced by a wine bar, my mothers jazz club hang out turned into a place for cougars to pick up young tech guys. Our neighborhood has changed names 3 times in 20 years and with the rising instances of gentrification in other predominantly poc neighborhoods we have all been dreading the day we got our notices, yelling at bros not to piss on our doorsteps, being kind to anyone we’ve seen in the area pre 2009 but sure enough now (much earlier than we ever expected) its finally reached us courtesy of the dumbass mayor himself ed lee and the housing authority. They’re ready to move the last poc community out the center of town they’ve done this so intelligently too not actually evicting anyone just saying the apartments need to be renovated and rents will increase now this may fool older folks (my family included) but I see through this rouse and find it hella suspect that these notices conveniently came a week after the condos pictured above were being fleshed out.

so while yes renovations are needed at the apartment complex, why now? Why after 15 years of residents dying of black mold exposure and pneumonia are they doing it? Why after replacing all the stairs are you going to tear down the buildings they are affixed to? Why the fuck is it suddenly a rush to prevent our inconvenient looking apartments to be in eyesight of new condos… and most importantly what is gonna happen to an ENTIRE complex that can’t afford to live the only place most of them have called home in sf?

The history of the apartment dwellers these condos are edging out is the epitome of black brown and yellow life in sf, the struggles, the immigrants, sailors, airforce fighters, nam vets, activists, the community, the rumors of Angela Davis once hiding out here from the police, the fact that my mom opened up our apt to several random teens who were displaced after the quake in ‘89 and not a single one of them disrespected the apt or stole , gossip about everything in the community but not everyone, the strange citings of OJ Simpson when he was still playing football, Tupac flirting with girls in the stairwells because he thought midtown girls were more intellectual, the pope driving by in the 80s, all the young poc who grew up here and went on to be productive and contributing society members because their foundation and sense of community kept them off the streets, the poet laureate who lived below me and made me love writing, the person my age workin 3 jobs so their immigrant mom can get rent money by babysittin local kids because she cant legally work, the girl who runs laps in the courtyard because that’s the only safe place for her to work out at night, the sad ghosts of all the Jonestown members that haunt the upper hallways , the garbage room that a member of en vogue often rehearsed in before hitting it big, the Indian cemetery that lies beneath the apartments that everyone believes is cursing its inhabitants…what happens to all of that? Where does the history of all of those lives go when they tear everything down to raise rents?

Well I guess it just goes nowhere or that’s what I’m supposed to believe because this ad pictures many a happy white person but conveniently fails to include the seniors, families, veterans, and disabled people of color who will be homeless less than a block away because the addition of these condos is tripling their rent prices from $800-1400 to nearly 3k a month

Also! One more thing North of NoPa isnt a neighborhood distinction this is the Western fuckin Addition your website is bullshit the pictures you have are from blocks away that’s not the neighborhood. I truly hope the owners of all Bens’, Beamers, Fiats, and Smart Cars that will soon be parked on Divisadero have insurance because if my family ends up houseless there’s a big chance I will be keying their cars with my apartment keys, smearing dog shit on door handles, and spray painting the hell out of the area
